Beginning in the late 19th century, Cleveland was becoming one of the strongest industrial centers in the United States. Factories began popping up all over Cleveland and worker demand was met with an ethnic migration from Europe. Factories were in walking distance from peoples homes. They were usually at the center of the community. This factory is located at the corner of Holmden Ave and Quigley Rd. Tremont was filled with many factories like this one during the late 1800s through the 1950s. Tremont and its industry have been tied since this era and remain so today.

This picture is what Gahr Machine Company looks like today. There have been significant changes made to the building structure itself since 1954. Obvious changes include; an addition on the east side of the building where there used to be a house, and the front of the building has been changed. A former fixture on St. Clair Avenue, they have recently moved to a smaller location at 26470 Lakeland Blvd., Euclid, Ohio. The Gahr Machine Company is just one of many vacancy examples on St. Clair Avenue.

This picture is of Gahr Machine Company in 1954. The machine company is located at 19199 St. Clair Avenue, in Euclid, Ohio. The building is located approximately one-half mile east of Nottingham Road. It is an example of the area's industrial past.

This outside view of the Superior Alcohol Factory in Cleveland, Ohio represents the look of many factories that were filled with children working. This factory may not have had children inside, but just looking at the outside conditions makes one wonder what the inside conditions would have been for a child worker.

This outside view of the Industrial Fiber Company in1925 shows the dismal work that occcured inside. Lewis Hines never made it to Cleveland to take photographs of child labor, but one can imagine that this factory, in the early 1900's, may have had many children working with the heavy-duty machines.

Several children are doffing in the Cherryville Mfg. Co in 1908. These boys and girls, as young as 5, started their day working instead of attending school. Many had no shoes and very old clothes to wear. In 1904, only 2 states limited child factory workers from working more than 8 hours a day!

In 1908, this was a common sight in factories that made cloth. She is making sure the machines run smoothly. Notice her right pocket stuffed with cotton from the machine. These bits of cotton need to be picked off to make sure the machines run smoothly.
