Rivers, Roads, and Rails

Rivers, Roads, and Rails is presented by Euclid City Schools, in collaboration with twenty-seven other school districts, Cleveland State University, Kenyon College, Case Western Reserve University, the Tuscarawas-Carroll-Harrison Educational Services Center, and the National Park Service. The project seeks to improve student achievement by improving the expertise and instructional skills of American History teachers. The Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway provides the organizational logic and intellectual rationale for the project, which uses the social, cultural, and economic heritage of the 110-mile long Canalway as a lens to refract major themes in traditional American history, focusing on three elements of history education: content training, historical-thinking skills, and best pedagogical practices. Teacher participants become master teachers by creating lesson materials, revising district history courses and curricula, and by mentoring colleagues and other regional teachers through face-to-face interactions and through interactive distance-learning meetings.
