As they carry out original research at institutions throughout the region, students routinely uncover useful and previously hidden historical materials. By collecting and publishing some of these materials online, we have begun the long overdue task of sharing and preserving the valuable work done by history students. In the process, students benefit from hands-on experience in digital archiving and self-publishing, which are quickly becoming requisite skills in the changing environment of museums, libraries, and academia.

We have now begun to harness this same idea in our Teaching American History workshops. Using the Omeka publishing tool, public school teachers in our workshops are able to upload images from the region’s research and cultural institutions, which they can share with colleagues and students, creating customized personal exhibits that are accessible even after the workshop ends.
