Save the Date: Public Humanities and Modern Africa Symposium

On Wednesday, September 2, 2015, Cleveland State University will host “The Public Humanities and Modern Africa: An Interdisciplinary Symposium.” Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in cooperation with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County, and CSU Black Studies Program, the symposium takes place in the historic Fenn Tower Ballroom.

Scholars and practitioners of history, anthropology, archaeology, art, education research design, geography, and library and information sciences gather to explore how the humanities and social sciences, informed by best practices in community-engaged and digital scholarship, can play a transformative role in modern Africa. Building upon MaCleKi, a National Endowment for the Humanities–funded collaboration between CSU’s Center for Public History + Digital Humanities and Maseno University to create the first humanities-based mobile app in East Africa, this symposium will engage scholars, students, teachers, museum professionals, librarians, and anyone with an interest in African culture and society, digital humanities, and the future of developing world. The symposium also kicks off the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County’s 2015-16 teacher workshop series “Teaching About Africa.”
